Star of Hope Foundation Romania together with the Associations of parents having children with disabilities from the North- Eastern Region of Romania will mark the International Day of People with Disabilities, December 3rd 2012 through a Solidarity March, which will take place simultaneously in Iasi, Barlad – Vaslui County, Piatra Neamt- Neamt County and Botosani.

We want to draw the attention of the community to the need and importance of respecting the rights of children with disabilities according to the U.N.O. Convention regarding the rights of people with disabilities, a document signed and also assumed by our country. Moreover, we have set as a goal the promotion of good practices models regarding the integration of children with disabilities in communities. We expect more than 2000 persons to take part in the Solidarity March.

„Having a disability doesn’t mean being useless to society. We want to be respected, not pitied, we want equal rights. We want a city that is accesible to all. We want unrestricted access to education. We want the community to be more and more involved in respecting the rights of people with disabilities”, declared Andreea Dăncinescu, representative of children with disabilities in Romania.

Star of Hope Foundation Romania together with the Associations of parents having children with disabilities are members of Inclusion Federation Romania in Bucharest, which supports the undertaken actions of Star of Hope Foundation to mark the International Day of People with Disabilities, December 3rd 2012 in Romania.

On the ocassion of this day, a memoir will be presented, containing the main aspects regarding the rights of children with disabilities, the obstacles they have to face, but also the possible courses of action. The need of involvement for local authorities in supporting social services for children with disabilities and their parents will be emphasized. The lack of designated funds can determine the supression of existing services, thus increasing the risk for marginalization, social exclusion, discrimination of children with disabilities. The long term effect would be an attack taken on the human being in its essence.

In Iasi, the action will start at 12.00 in Union Square. Children, parents, people with disabilities, representatives of NGOs , officials and teachers will participate. The proposed route for the march is: Union Square- Stefan cel Mare Boulevard- Palas Mall Garden. In Palas Mall Garden, the participants will gather with those creating the Human Bow, organized by „Alături de Voi România” Foundation, as a sign of solidarity for those infected with HIV/ AIDS, who are also people with disabilities.

In November 2012 Star of Hope Romania has started the campaign “ Give to change a destiny! ”, in Iasi, which will take place from November 15th to December 15th 2012, having as main ambassadors the writer Dan Lungu and the designer Cristina Nichita.

The first activity of the campaign has been the foundation of the National Federation of Organizations of Parents having Children with Disabilities. The establishment of this Federation is a very important first step in the process of empowering parents, being one of the main objectives of Star of Hope Romania Foundation.

The subsequent event that will take place as part of the regional campaign “ Give to change a destiny! ” is the Gratitude Gala, a charitable evening dedicated to raising funds to help children with disabilities in rural areas of Iasi County. The Gala will take place on December 4th and will start at 5:00 p.m in Chopin/ Vivaldi Congress Hall Palas. Special guests of the evening are His Excellency Anders Bengtcen, the Ambassador of Sweden in Bucharest and the Mayor of Iasi, Mr. Gheorghe Nichita. More than 100 officials and representatives of companies, NGOs and parents’ associations from all the counties of Moldova region will also attend the Gala.

From November 30th to December 15th 2012, objects made by the parents of children with disabilities can be purchased from Palas Mall.

Star of Hope Romania Foundation is a Romania nongovernmental organization, founded in 1998, having the main office in Iasi. The mission of the foundation is to improve the quality of life for children in difficulty, especially those having disabilities. The foundation has established and ensures financial support for 6 day centers for children in difficulty, with more than 1000 beneficiaries.

Star of Hope is certified as a supplier of social services, its main objective being the empowerment of parents. The foundation has established 10 associations of parents having children with Down syndrome, autism and neurological-motor deficiencies, in Iasi, Botosani and Vaslui counties. Star of Hope Romania is a member of Star of Hope International from Sweden, an organization that has ensured assistance and know-how transfer to the experts in Romania, for over 20 years. In Iasi County, Star of Hope Romania has opened in December 2010 the Regional Rehabilitation Center Star of Hope for children with disabilities in all Moldova Region
