Star of Hope Romania Background

Star of Hope Romania is partner of Star of Hope International from Sweden that has been developing projects in our country since 1989.

First humanitarian aid was sent by "Hoppets Stjärna" from Sweden, which eventually turned into Star of Hope International. This help was sent on 1989 Christmas and New Year occasion, right after Romanian revolution. The aid meant food, clothing, and toys.

Considering the conditions and needs from local institutions for children, Star of Hope International has continuously restructured its supporting actions and humanitarian aid in all units that it was involved in. so, if at the very beginning, as we said, they sent humanitarian aid, further actions diversified. Beside food, clothing and shoes, the organization financially supported new employees in Romanian units (nurses, educational trainers, rehabilitation specialists – speech therapist and physiotherapist).

In 1999 was set up the local organization Star of Hope Romania with main office in Iasi. Starting with this year, Star of Hope Romania carried on all projects that were started by Star of Hope International, but main priority was to provide services for the children with disabilities that lived in their own family. In all projects we develop partnership with local authorities and representatives of child protection system. In the center of all its activities Star of Hope Romania has the child ad social environments: family, institutions, school, community, local and central activities. By all implemented programs we promote the principles of community based rehabilitation for children with disabilities. We are actively present in our local community.

All actions that were implemented in local units have been always adapted to identified conditions and needs. In 2000 the President of Romania wanted to repay all humanitarian aid and the import role Star of Hope played and conformed National Order – “Romania Star” as a Knight to Star of Hope International president, Erik Gunnar Eriksson.

In all these years Star of Hope Romania was supported by Sweden embassy in Bucharest and was visited by its representatives. In 1999 Mr. Nils Revelius, Ambassador at that time, visited Star of Hope Romania in Iasi.

Now Star of Hope Romania is becoming more and more dynamic and efficient in social services field and a constant promoter of Community Based Rehabilitation programs. This strategy is based on total and coordinated involvement of people with disabilities and their families in local community.
